Onion for Hair Growth : Does it work?

In this article, I will discuss onion juice for hair growth and go through what does onion contains, what science says about this, side effects, how to make and use it, conclusion, and about market onion oil.

  • What does an onion contain?

Onions are rich in a chemical group called flavonoids, these give onions their respective color.

Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and their consumption has been linked to a variety of health benefits, cardiovascular health, protection of the nervous system, and even anti-cancer properties.

Onion juice is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory

Aside from flavonoid onions are also rich in sulfur. This is a very powerful antibacterial believed to be very beneficial for the skin. But the main point is can onion juice help to prevent hair fall.

  • What does science say about onion for hair growth?

The study which was performed in 2014, was published in the JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY.

At that time we have only one study about the whole scenario, the study consist of 38 participants (24 males and 14 females) having alopecia areata are taken, this is an autoimmune type of hair loss, leads to the appearance of bald patches on certain areas.

So the patients in this study were split into 2 groups, Group 1 applied onion juice on their scalp twice daily, Group 2 applied tap water twice daily.

After two months of treatment, 86.9% of the patients of group 1 had full hair regrowth, but they can’t exactly understand how it happened it can be the effect of flavonoid or can be sulfur but they exactly don’t know about that.

But the most surprising effect is that there is a dramatic or sudden reduction in their dandruff.

  • Onion juice is safe or it has any side effects?

One question arises that there is a side effect of applying onion on the scalp, as we know that it is natural treatment it doesn’t have severe side effects but some common problem is itching and irritation if you find irritation is intense then dilute the juice with some water and carrier oil.

So I have explained everything about the onion juice so it is up to you, to apply or not.

  • How to make onion juice at home.

Putting them in a juicer and straining the juice, you can use muslin cloth or handkerchief for straining purposes.

  • How to apply onion juice?

1-You can directly apply it to your scalp or you can mix it with some carrier oil such as coconut oil.

2-You can simply add to your shampoo, consider using a natural or sulfate-free shampoo.

3-Make an onion juice hair mask, 2 tablespoons of onion juice, and 1 tablespoon of honey.

But the main point is to massage the juice into the scalp and allow it to sit before rinsing out for at least 15 min or even overnight.

  • Conclusion

About onion juice there is not much-published research, there are only stories shared by people. As there is a good reason to use this in your hair care routine because of its ability to reduce DHT levels and inflammation in the scalp.

If you are too sensitive and experiencing discomfort, discontinue using this.
